This weekend I had the inestimable privilege of watching my mother graduate summa cum laude from Emmanuel College. I’m so proud of her I’m tearing up now writing about it.
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone work so hard, so diligently on a degree while balancing all the other demands of an adult life. She earned this degree while working at a demanding career, running a small business and showing up for her family and friends. She’s always been my inspiration. This is just one more public opportunity to show the world why.
The graduation itself was an event like any other graduation. The kids were bored, because the speeches were boring. The graduates were radiant, like you are when you get your degree. The whole event boiled down to that magic moment when my mom was handed hers and all her long years of study and hard work came to a beautiful close.
Not that she won’t keep studying. You don’t earn your college degree this late in life without being a lifetime learner. I can’t wait to see what she does next. She mentioned cooking classes, dancing and spending more time with her grandkids all as possibilities.
