Moving My Body

I think I mentioned that my resolution on returning home was to shift towards self-care, especially when it comes to taking care of my body. More sleep, better food, more exercise. It’s been almost two weeks now and I’ve been living into that goal with a passion.

I joined the yoga studio near my house, and have actually been getting up three mornings a week and going to yoga. I’d forgotten how much I love a good yoga class. My at-home yoga practice has never been very strong. There’s just something about a good class and a good teacher that a DVD or book can’t replace. It’s been incredible to see the changes in my ability just in two weeks of practice, and I’m loving every minute of the classes. Except for the part where I have to do eleventy-million pushups each class. They don’t warn you about that in the brochure.

I also…drumroll, please…ran a 5K! Well, for values of ran that are walked and ran and walked and ran some more. But I did it and at the end I was tired and hungry but not broken. I am totally going to do it again. I may even try to gear up for a triathlon.

The more sleep part of the plan has been less successful, but feeling the effects of sleep deprivation again after finally being rid of it have made me all the more determined to learn good sleep habits. And on that note, good night Internets. I’ll see you in the morning.

Good luck with doing a triathlon!!! I say absolutely do it. An annual series of them (aimed at normal, everyday women) started several years ago where I lived. I did about 10 over a couple of years, and I’m absolutely not fit at all. The distances were perfect: swim 300m (in the sea where it was possible), 3k bike ride and 1k run.

If there is something like that round you, definitely look in to doing it. It’s nowhere near as scary as it sounds!

Those do sound about perfect. I’ll have to look for something similar here. I’ve always loved to bike and swim, and since I’ve gotten into running, a triathlon is starting to seem possible for me.

There’s a sprint triathlon in Dorchester in summer (The Urban Epic Tri – don’t be intimidated by the name). Daniel did it in ’09.

Congrats on the race! I was there, too!

There are some awesome local sprint (short) triathlons: Hyannis, Salem, Buzzard’s Bay. Plus one in Hopkinton in July (? I think) that’s for women only.
