Rio is learning to read and write at a seemingly impossible pace since starting first grade. It’s amazing, and totally unlike how I expected her learning process to go. It’s not like the lights are suddenly coming on because she’s ready to crack the code herself: she’s learning just what her teachers teach her, at the rate they’re teaching it.
But she’s learning fast and well. Every day she comes home from school knowing more, and having more real skills.
She’s started writing stories. The other day, not satisfied with the short story format, she branched out and wrote her first “chapter book”, a creative masterpiece that she not only wrote, but also illustrated and hand-bound with her very own stapler.
As she was doing it, I said, “Wow, Rio, you’re really writing up a storm.”
“What?”
“You’re writing up a storm.”
“I think you mean story, Mama. The word is story.”
Well, yes, love. I guess it is.
So she wrote her story, and half an hour later came to find me upstairs, where I was folding laundry with her
sister.
“Can I go outside?”
“Sure.”
“Can I take the Scotch tape?”
“Why?”
“I want to post my story.”
“You what now?”
“I am going to go outside, and find a post, and post my story just in case anyone else in the world wants to see it.”
And she did.

Of course I agree! I may adopt it myself.
