Last time Serena saw a dog, a few weeks ago, she said, “Mama! Dog! Woof-woof!”
Today, as we were getting out of the car, two dogs fenced into a nearby yard came running up and barked at us. Serena stopped and stared. She took a few steps towards the dogs, who were waiting eagerly at the fence.
“Look! Here are some dogs, Mama. These big dogs. There are two dogs. This a black dog and a brown dog.”
“Yes. Those are two big dogs. One is black and one is brown.”
She took a few more steps towards the dogs.
“Say ‘woof-woof’ dogs.”
The dogs stare at her.
“Mama, I tell these dogs say ‘woof-woof’. Look! Say ‘woof-woof’, dogs!”
The dogs do not say woof-woof, or anything at all. Neither do I, because I’m sort of stunned at all the complete sentences that just tumbled out of that child’s mouth.
It’s moments like this that make all the diaper-changing, floor-mopping, sleep-deprived hours of being a mom worthwhile, for me.
