Yes! A sonnet for Liz and Pete

Home from Chicago. The wedding was lovely; a perfectly fitting event for a couple I deeply love, and who clearly love each other. I had the privilege of giving a reading at their wedding. Here’s what I wrote for them:

Yes!

This love begins, like love will, with a yes

Yes, I think I will stay in Chicago

Yes, stay! Keep talking, keep laughing, kiss and

Take our yes on the road, ride our tandem

To the market for baskets of ripe summer love

To cry yes to things found in thrift stores

And alleys: baubles, bottles and books

Yes to what beauty washes up on life’s shores

Then winter storms angry, short on laughter, cold

Like flowers you’re faded, less bounteous.

Snow falls hard. Winds blow but you hold

Fast to each other. This is love, nothing less.

Love’s seasons turn, sunlight blooms, clouds close in.

Keep saying yes! Continue as you begin!
