Sierra,

This is a lovely and moving piece. Would you let me reprint is as a "guest blog" on The Non-Consumer Advocate?

Katy Wolk-Stanley
"Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without."

@Kate - thanks for the comment. It's great to hear about it from the librarian side.

I came over here from your Babble article, and I am so glad I did! This post is wonderful. Little Rio seems quite precocious.

I work in a public library, and I love being the one to issue first cards to little ones! Really, a library card is a powerful thing. Think of all the worlds that will open to her, the journeys those chapter books will take her on!

I cried reading this. I forget how much the library mattered, and matters to me. I do love our library's adult stacks and I should visit more often. I will take Rio to the library any time.

Lovely. Just lovely. I look forward to the day my son can react to the library, and hope it will be with as much joy.

One of the gleeful pursuits of my childhood involved my public library's "summer reading program." As far as I can recall, this program simply involved listing books you'd read in a special booklet made of colored paper. I think we got some prizes -- maybe stickers in the book or something? -- when we'd read a certain number, so it must have been aimed at getting kids who didn't read to do so.

Of course, I was not one of those kids, but I still remember feeling incredibly accomplished when writing down the titles of hundreds of books over the course of three months, and deriving a lot of glee from the librarian's show of being impressed.
