My daughter the Dalek

The girls are having a pretty one-sided conversation since Serena can’t really talk yet. Suddenly, Rio breaks into a creepy robotic voice and starts saying, “YOU WILL BE REMOTED. YOU WILL BE REMOTED. YOU WILL BE REMOTED.”

Serena freezes somewhere between terror and curiosity and just stares at her.

“Are you a …Dalek?” I ask after awhile.

“No, Mama,” Rio says in her normal voice, casual as anything. “I was just pretending to be a robot. But I’m not pretending anymore.”

“Cool.”

Silence blesses us for a few peaceful moments. Then from behind me I hear, “I AM A DALEK!”
