Night weaning, continued

Serena, not a baby anymore. She ran most of the way home from Davis Sq. today, while I trailed behind her pushing an empty stroller. And she’s ready for the night weaning, even if she doesn’t like it.

Since I first posted about night weaning:

  • Ellen helpfully pointed out that Serena might be getting her two-year molars. “Are your teeth hurting you?” I asked. “Teeth! Teeth!” she said and opened wide to show me. Yep, four white swollen area, almost like blisters at the back of her mouth.
  • Amy sent me this article. the attachment parenting schmoop about the wonders of family bed gets a little over the top, but it’s a good article with a nice simple system for knocking off night nursing in a fairly efficient way. We decided to try it.
  • And then, at 2 a.m., when Serena woke up and came into my room howling for milk, I had a clever idea. I told Serena my plan. “You can snuggle and nurse for a few minutes, but then you have to go back to your own bed, or go sleep by Daddy. You can’t nurse all night, OK?” She nodded. We went back to bed, snuggled and nursed for a few minutes, and then I said, “You should head over to Daddy now.” and she got up and crawled away from me. Martin flopped a sleepy arm over her, and everyone fell peacefully asleep. Why didn’t I think of that sooner? So much easier when I can get her on my side.

Hooray! May the rest of it go just as easily, and may you enjoy many uninterrupted stretches of sleep very soon :)
