I try and intercept those plastic - last for 2 minutes - toys and use them as rewraps or in most cases, take them to the op shops. No matter how many times we tell people not to give our kids that kind of junk it still happens.

This is a great post. Am I bad for sneakily (under the cover of night) putting those gifted Disney style toys in a bag bound for Goodwill? I just don't want them around.

I figure when my son is a teenager, this won't be so easy to get away with. But for now (he's 2) I am the Mighty Ruler Of Our Environment. So. It's good to be Queen, I guess.

Luckily, his favorite stuff, by far, is the "real" stuff. The broken blender, the camera, the magnifying glass, the dog's collar, the bag of potting soil, the feather and shell collection, and of course, Dad's tools.

P's favorite new toy of the last weeks: not the brand-new mountain bike (although it's great and he loves it), but the $2 lacrosse ball, which has been his constant companion playing outside and has been the center of a number of newly created multi-player ball games.

I agree. My 13 month old son prefers common household objects to toys. Much to my dismay, though, when he does play with toys, he gravitates to the garish and flashy plastic ones mostly purchased by grandparents. He has loads of wooden Haba toys that he could care less about. I like them, but he has no interest. As much I would like, I can't make him care that they are made from sustainable materials and don't give me a headache.
