oh how wonderful!

another amazing gift that my daughter received on her birthday from some creative, frugal friends was a small cardboard box with three fake pearls in it, a little round rock, a single gold dollar and a scroll with a story handwritten on it about a princess who finds a box containing three treasures. The treasures are gifts from the fairies to help her grow to be a wise queen: three gems on which she can make a wish for herself, a wish for someone else and a wish for the world, a stone to carry her sad, confused feelings for her, and a coin to ensure she'll have just enough of what she needs in life.

It was one of the most touching gifts we've ever received. I asked the mom about it and she said she has done this for every child's birthday party they've been invited to for almost six years now. She and her daughter go through the house and find a few small objects to give away, and then write a story about them together for the birthday kid.

Wow- that is super cool.
I'm doing the Compact as well, and one of the best parts is finding out that people love the gifts I'm coming up with. I thought they'd be considered lame.
My brother's birthday was about a week ago (he's 41 and I'm older) and he's been going through a rough time, so I gave him a beautiful "worry stone" that my mother had given me years ago. I think it's tiger eye, it's a really nice stone. I still love it but wasn't using it, so I put it in a little chinese fabric bag- it fit perfectly- and passed it along to him with a note. he loved it.
