Rio, in the bath, suddenly moves her hand in a circular motion, one finger extended as if drawing in sand. “Circle. Circle. Circle,” she says.
My delight cannot be overestimated. She knows a shape! and such a beautiful shape! a circle. she is holding, in her other hand, a circular cup full of water. We talk about circle’s of water, and I ask her to point at a circle – she shows me the one in her hand.
“What else is a circle?” I ask, expecting her to point out round bath toys and the circular shower fixture.
She thinks for a moment and then leaps up, shouting, “Luna! Luna! Luna!” and making her circular gesture over her head.
