A little while ago, I handed Rio a dried prune and set her on the floor. She wandered around with it for a minute, happily sucking on the fruit which she had clasped in one hand.
Then she saw a Cat. She approached the Cat respectfully, holding the fruit out in front of her. It became clear that she was offering it to the Cat. He walked over, smelled it, and politely declined. Rio seemed a little shaken by the rejection. She clutched the fruit in both hands, and turned away. Looking down, she talked urgently to her prune for about thirty seconds, and then went back for another round of negotiations with the Cat. He was immoveable on the subject: no prunes for cats. Rio finally tore the prune in half, threw half of it to the floor between her and the Cat and walked away, eating the remaining half.
I wish I knew what that child was thinking.
